The First Thing You Should Do When Your Flight Gets Cancelled

The First Thing You Should Do When Your Flight Gets CancelledYou're waiting and waiting and waiting and then your flight gets cancelled. While everyone else gets into a fit of anger and chaos, your first move, besides heading towards that long service kiosk line, is to call the airline.

Brett Snyder of air-traveler assistance firm Cranky Concierge says on Real Simple that with this step, "you're essentially cutting the line in front of you." Keep the number of the airline you're flying in your wallet to expedite the booking process and reduce the amount of time you have to spend dealing with the cancelled flight.

The article also mentions you could invoke an old "Rule 240" that says that major airlines have to offer you any available seat on the next flight out?even a seat on a competing airline. Airfarewatchdog, however, says that only United and Alaska still have this rule, although I did find language about Rule 240 on American Airlines. I guess you could check your airline's rules before flying just in case.
